About NEAS

Project “NEAS” -- Curriculum Clearinghouse Initiative

Objective

Project “NEAS” (hereafter “the Project”) aims at developing, collecting, and disseminating information and ideas about college- and graduate school-level curriculum focused on Northeast Asia. The main objective of the project is to promote the study of each political entity in the region and the region as a whole, with a particular focus on the international relations among the regional entities, region-wide policy issues, and opportunities and challenges in regional cooperation.  The Project will cover political, economic, security, and environmental fields. The issues covered include, but are not limited to, diplomacy, trade, investment, traditional and non-traditional security, environment, population and migration, culture, as well as the impact of globalization and major developments in other parts of the world.

For the purpose of this project “Northeast Asia” is defined to include the People’s Republic of China (PRC, or China), the Republic of China (ROC, or Taiwan), the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK, or North Korea), the Republic of Korea (ROK, or South Korea), Japan, Mongolia, and the Russian Federation (Russia).  The project will also cover curriculum-related issues related to these regional entities’ relations with countries outside of their immediate geographical area, particularly the United States

Methods & Contents

The Project will be web-based.  It will post information at a website independently managed by the Project Staff but housed at the Monterey Institute, in full compliance with the rules and regulations of the Institute.

The information disseminated through the Project will include materials in the major Northeast Asian languages, i.e., Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Russian, in addition to English materials.

The information to be posted on this website, once fully functional, will include:

(1) Syllabi;

(2) Reading assignments, including published and unpublished articles, books, book chapters, and reports;

(3) Bibliographies;

(4) Model research papers;

(5) An annotated directory of useful sites and links;

(6) An annotated directory of academic programs and individual faculty and links to them;

(7) An annotated directory of educators, researchers, and writers and links to them;

(8) Announcements of conferences, seminars, public lectures, scholarships and internships, and study opportunities;

(9) Subject/country index;

(10) Key-word search function; and

(11) A forum for discussion on Northeast Asia curriculum issues.

The Project will encourage individuals and institutions currently engaged in research and education focused on Northeast Asia to submit information that is directly relevant to the development of college- and graduate school-level curriculum, such as unpublished papers, syllabi, annotated bibliographies, and announcements of academic meetings, from which curriculum materials may result, scholarships, internships, and study opportunities for students.  Such information may be posted to the Project website or links may be provided.

The Project will select other institutional and individual websites relevant to the Project and make necessary arrangements for information exchange, including establishment and ongoing maintenance of links with those sites.

The Project will support the efforts by MIIS faculty and others to develop, collect, and disseminate curriculum materials and information outlined above. Support may be used for field trips, participation in academic conferences and workshops on curriculum development and dissemination, and lecture trips to share Project results with educators in the U.S. and abroad.
